One of the responsibilities of Finnish Workers' Compensation Center (TVK) is to compile statistics, as referred to in section 236 of the Workers' Compensation Act, on accidents at work and occupational diseases and to perform other statistics-related tasks. In other words, TVK is the official Finnish statistics authority for accidents at work and occupational diseases. Every calendar year, insurance institutions underwriting insurance as defined in the Workers' Compensation Act as well as the State Treasury have to provide TVK with information, broken down by policyholder and accident, necessary for the purpose of compiling statistics.
In addition, TVK compiles statistics on accidents occurred to professional sportsmen and the compensation paid as well as maintains a register of insured sportsmen. The basis for this is the Act on Sportsmen’s Accident Insurance and Pensions (2009/276).
Exceptions to TVK's statistics compilation task are accidents compensated under the Act on Farmers’ Accident Insurance. Compensation is paid and statistics compiled by Farmers’ Social Insurance Institution, which is the central provider of accident coverage for farmers.
TVK has the right, without prejudice to confidentiality provisions or other restrictions concerning access to information, to provide Statistics Finland with the information on accident notifications necessary for the purpose of compiling statistics under the competence of Statistics Finland describing social circumstances and their development with respect to accidents at work. Similarly, TVK has the right to provide The Institute of Occupational Health in Finland with the same information on occupational diseases.
